Following the Troops

Not all women who followed the troops served as nurses or soldiers. Some were soldiers’ wives, girlfriends, or relatives as well as laundresses.

Vivandières (which means “hospitality givers”) and the Daughters of the Regiment also traveled with the soldiers. They took part in parades and drills and often got a taste of battle. They carried water for the wounded soldiers, did laundry, and waved the company flag. These women usually wore sashes and lively uniforms. August Foster was a Daughter of the Regiment with the Second Maine Infantry. She spent most of her time nursing wounded soldiers. At Bull Run, she had her horse shot out from under her.
